Baba Baidyanath Temple

I

The Baba Baidyanath Temple, also known as Baidyanath Dham or Vaidyanath Temple, is one of the most revered and sacred Hindu temples in India. It is located in Deoghar in the state of Jharkhand, in the eastern part of India. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is considered one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, which are the holiest shrines of Lord Shiva in Hinduism.

The legend associated with the Baba Baidyanath Temple is known as the story of Ravana and the lingam. According to Hindu mythology, Ravana, the demon king of Lanka (Sri Lanka), was a devout devotee of Lord Shiva. He performed intense penance to please Lord Shiva and obtain a powerful lingam (an abstract representation of Lord Shiva) that would make him invincible.

Pink Sugar

Pleased with Ravana's devotion, Lord Shiva decided to grant his wish. However, he placed a condition that the lingam, once placed on the ground, should not be placed back until it reaches its final destination. Ravana agreed to the condition and started his journey back to Lanka with the lingam.

On his way, Ravana needed to perform his morning rituals and needed someone to hold the lingam temporarily. He encountered a brahmin boy named Baiju who agreed to hold the lingam for him. However, as soon as Baiju held the lingam, it became rooted to the ground and could not be moved. This place became the location of the Baba Baidyanath Temple.

The temple's lingam is said to be the same one brought by Ravana and is revered as the Jyotirlinga of Baidyanath. Devotees from all over India and abroad visit the temple to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva and to offer their prayers. The temple complex is quite large and features various shrines and holy ponds.

The Baba Baidyanath Temple is particularly crowded during the Shravani Mela, an annual pilgrimage and fair held during the Hindu month of Shravan (usually July to August). Thousands of devotees undertake a 100-kilometer walk from the town of Sultanganj to the temple during this period, carrying holy water from the Ganges River to offer to Lord Shiva.

Overall, the Baba Baidyanath Temple holds immense religious significance for Hindus, and its legend is a cherished part of Hindu mythology.

Legends says that the king established, built this Mandir, when he was returning from a war after defeating. He established this temple at this very place and by the blessings of goddess Ma (Mother) Kali he got his state back.[8]

According to anathor legend, Chamru pandas (Brahmin) use to come to visit two times in a year to the king of this region. The king asked them to live in this place to do puja, and they started to live at this place. One day these Brahmins was doing tapasya in this wild, when goddess gave darshan (visit) to them and said she wants to meet them. The Brahmins told this incident to the king. King cleared this temple's area, during this work they found a black stone. The labours returned their respective homes after being tired, they came next day to do work when they saw a mandir formed at this place.[7]

Some peoples believes that this mandir was built by Emperor Ashok, when he was on the war campaign of Kalinga (Now knows as Odisha).[7]

Mandir

The Mandir have impact of tribal culture (specially Bhumij tribes). Here tribal peoples do the work of everyday puja. The temple is situated near Ranchi of Jharkhand.[8][10] Tribal pahans (prist) do the puja for six days of week and only one day a Brhamin do the work of puja at this temple. The Garbhagriha have the murti of Maa Deudi Devi.[11]

• Renovation

This mandir is renovated. The new temple bult around the ancient Mandir, which was said to bulit in 1300 A.D. A compound wall built around this temple. Artist from Odisha done the work of design carvings.[12] The priests of this temple do not know exactly how old is this Mandir.[13]

Administration

In October 2020 the district government took over the charge of the temple management after frequent complaints of wrongdoings and lack of transparency in the functioning. It is administered by 13 member committee, which have representatives from administration, 2 public representatives and rest from are from temple and nearby village's citizens. Beforere that the temple was run by few priest and some locals, who alleged to mismanagement.[14]

The temple also has an idol of Lord Shiva and the complex is spread over 2 acres. The Deori Mandir was originally built by a tribal devotee of the goddess with nothing but sandstone.

It is believed that this temple is the only temple where 6 tribal priests, Pahan, perform rituals and offer prayers alongside the Brahmin priests.

"According to Pujari Ji, it is about 300 years old. Till ten years ago the temple was simple as a hut and there was no idol or statue, instead, there was a "Shira" (A small round lump like structure). Such "Shira"s are still prevalent in many small village Devi temples. The Devi here is Mahamaya Goddess.

Maya Tungri Mandir - The Mahamaya Temple, Ramgarh, Jharkhand

Location

Goddess Mahamaya at Maya Tungri Mandir
at Ramgarh, Jharkhand

When you go to Ramgarh from Ranchi via Ormanjhi, you go through the Ramgarh Ghati. The four-lane road is good to travel. This Ghati is between Toll plaza, Ormanjhi and Ramgarh with about 6.5 km length. Just before entering Ramgarh you get a look of Maya Tungri hillock which is just beside the road. The temple at the top is visible from a distance.

Introduction of Goddess

Shivalinga in a cave at Maya-Tungri Temple
at Ramgarh, Jharkhand

This is a very old temple. According to Pujari Ji, it is about 300 years old. Till ten years ago the temple was simple as a hut and there was no idol or statue, instead, there was a "Shira" (A small round lump like structure). Such "Shira"s are still prevalent in many small village Devi temples. The Devi here is Mahamaya Goddess. This goddess is so powerful that She can even take God Vishnu under her influence. As it is said in the first Chapter (Adhyay) of Sridurga Saptshati that when God Vishnu was sleeping on the Ksheer Sagar under the influence of Goddess Mahamaya, earwax from the ears of Vishnu fell down and they turned into two fearful Demons named Madhu and Kaitabh. These demons saw Brahma sitting on a lotus flower which was put on the naval of sleeping Vishnu. They ran to kill Brahma. Brahma expected Vishnu to save him but He was sleeping under the influence of Mahamaya. So Brahma prayed to Goddess Mahamaya to let Vishnu wake up to save him. The Brahma's prayers are known as "Ratrisukta". The Goddess pleased with Brahma's prayers allowed Vishnu to wake up. Vishnu then killed both demons and saved Brahma. This Goddess Mahamaya is known as Maya Devi among local people. The small hillock (Pahadi) is said Tungri in the local language, hence this place is locally known as "Maya Tungri" located at Kankebar area at Ramgarh.

Distance from Ranchi

It is about 38 km from Ranchi and about an hour's journey by a car. The road is fine and you can see the forest on both sides of the road when out of the town. There is a Toll-gate at Ormanjhi which takes Rs 100 for one way journey and Rs 150 for both ways within 24 hours. The car will go up to the one-third height of the hillock. The parking space is good and pucca but the approach road from the main road is still kuchcha and under construction. Rest to-third height has pucca steps up to the temple. Solar lights are provided for evening visitors. Water is pumped through pipes from the boring at the base to the temple.

The temple at present

Now the main temple is a pucca structure with three idols in it. In the middle is the Goddess Mahamaya. The idol is a Goddess' head. Another idol is of Durga riding a lion. The third idol is of Sri Hanuman. There is a small Kali temple in front of this main temple with a black Kali idol facing South.

Since there must be a Shiva temple near the Devi temple, there is a Shivalinga here which is inside a natural Cave like structure. It is on the right side of the temple at a down level. The way is Kuchcha and rocky. Locals call it Naag-Baba because of a Nag snake which is seen occasionally here. Darshan of Nag (seeing the snake) is said to be fruitful. You can buy Prasadam here to offer to the Goddess.

Steps to go uphill

The uphill going is tiresome for older people but once you reach the top it is very peaceful and beautiful around. One side you can see the highway in the Ghati and on the other is villages, fields and some chimneys which look smaller in size.

People have much faith in the Mahamaya Goddess and believe that She will fulfill their desires. Have time and visit this temple. Jai Maa Mahamaya _/\_.
